He said: "We are struggling against a coup attempt, against terrorists. The Western world must understand what we are dealing with.”
Turkish media has also accused Obama’s administration of being behind the coup attempt, even claiming a Washington think tank played a part.
But State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau described Erdogan's comments as "inflammatory rhetoric" that is "absolutely not helpful".
She told Politico: "We’re very focused on lowering the temperature.
"We understand that this was a serious situation, but at the same time the rhetoric doesn’t help advance the situation.”
Erdogan has also expressed his fury that US Secretary of State John Kerry had not visited the country following the failed coup on July 15.
Speaking after hearing Kerry would visit the country this month, the Turkish president said: "It is late, too late.
“This makes us sad. What more do Americans need? Their strategic ally is facing a coup and it takes them 45 days before sending anyone over? This is shocking.”
The warning comes as the Turkish president continues to fall out with EU leaders over Ankara's possible reintroduction of the death penalty.
Erdogan said: "If the nation makes such a decision, I believe political parties will abide by this decision."
This has led to EU bosses claiming Turkey will not be given access to the bloc if it introduces capital punishment.
